Our Health and Safety Construction Site Inspections are a “moment in time” monitoring process conducted by our health and safety consultants who are Chartered Health and Safety Practitioners, Certified Members of the Association of Project Safety and CDM experts. We are looking for existing and potential hazards as well as coaching and engaging with site workers in the process. We identify solutions that are practical and effective so we are not just identifying problems. Where good management controls and behaviour are identified, these are also documented in the inspection.
What do we look at in the inspection?
We have a well structured and informative report that includes details on CDM duty holders, activities on site for the day, contractors on site, photos and then a system where non-compliances are flagged for attention at the start of the report. Why do you need it?
Clients
If you are a client you are required to make sure that your principal contractor is fulfilling their duties under CDM 215 (Construction Design Management Regulations). The report provides details not only on compliance but how improvements can be made.
Principal Contractors
As part of your duties and responsibilities under CDM you need to know how your site, management and contractors are performing and the inspection is a simple way of doing this for Health , Safety, Fire and CDM.
Contractors
Contractors are often asked to carry out regular independent inspections and this is where Complisafe Limited come in. We have bespoke inspections for contractors that deliver a percentage score and a succinct report on performance. Our consultants are always happy to engage directly with your main contractor and feed back into company Directors when required.
The monitoring and review of preventative and protective measures is a requirement of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations for which routine workplace health and safety inspections are to be conducted to check that such measures are in place and effective. Inspections demonstrate that a proactive approach is being taken to health and safety and that actual performance is being monitored. Health and Safety inspections are needed for principal contractors, clients, accreditations, management systems but most of all to prevent injury and ill health.
How do we deliver it?
Our health and safety inspections are carried out by our competent and experienced health and safety consultants. Inspections start with a brief meet and catch up with the site manager or supervisor and where relevant a review of the outstanding items from the last inspection.
We will inspect the site as well as observing work in progress and activities taking place at the time, we will engage with workers and where required ask for any unsafe activities or tasks to be stopped to prevent injury or ill health. We will also check documentation, competencies, risk assessments and methods of work that are appropriate for that inspection. We will also discuss future planned works before summarising the inspection with the site manager/supervisor. A written inspection report is then provided with an action plan.
How much does it cost?
The cost of inspections is competitive. It is certainly cheaper than the £166 hourly rate which is applied should you get a visit from the HSE and a material breach is found on your site!
A material breach is something which an inspector considers serious enough that they need to formally write to the business requiring action to be taken to deal with the material breach. If the inspector gives you a notification of contravention (NoC) after their visit, you’ll have to pay a fee. The NoC must include:
- the law that the inspector considers has been broken
- the reason(s) for their opinion
- notification that a fee is payable to HSE
Where an inspector simply gives you advice, either verbal or written, you won’t have to pay anything for this advice.
We discuss fees with every client so we can understand the type and number of projects you are involved in, the frequency of inspections required and locations of the sites and any nuances on the project.
